Heads In The Clouds

HPCC's Tom Paino and Eedie Cuminale wrote a letter to Continental Airlines concerning the company's article "Going Cosmopolitan Across the River" in the December 1996 issue of their magazine Profiles. The Coalition was surprised to find an article about such a controversial issue as Queens West in a company magazine and dismayed at the one-sidedness of the article.

Mr. Paino and Ms. Cuminale pointed out to Profile Editor Ms. Ann Studebaker that the article wrongly portrayed Hunters Point as "sleepy" and wrote "...portraying the existing community as 'sleepy,' or in need of additional cosmopolitanism, continues the falsehoods publicized by the private interests, who stand to profit from such misperceptions."

The 58,000 local workers, whose hard work helps make the Hunters Point industrial "thrive" factor second only to Manhattan's garment district, might also be offended by this negative image.

To help Continental develop a more balanced story, Paino and Cuminale invited Ms. Studebaker for a ground level tour of the neighborhood.
