Community to Review Park Plans

After relentless urging from the Coalition for local input into the project, the Queens West Task Force set up a subcommittee of community representatives. These representatives were asked, through their own community outreach, to make recommendations concerning the design of the new park in "Gantry Plaza." Since the focus was on play equipment and senior needs, the Coalition encouraged parents and seniors in the neighborhood to participate.

There were numerous meetings, including a tour of park space in Manhattan. These small working meetings are important to establish dialogue with Queens West, but we continue to request a more democratic process, one that involves the entire community. Queens West has informed the Coalition that they will hold a public meeting to review the park plans.

While Queens West plans to build on a 74-acre site, the community has been consulted on an area less than one fifth of an acre, or only 7,000 square feet. The Coalition believes these meetings should review more substantial issues such as the bulk and density of the project.
