Attractive Nuisance Vs. Unattractive Nuisance

Due to the HPCC¹s efforts, the Long Island City Parent¹s Group (LICPG) participated in the planning of play space in Gantry Plaza. However, the parents wonder if Queens West will use any of their ideas. The parents¹ suggestions of interesting and challenging play equipment surrounded by grass and trees (see above illustration) might be lost, thanks to two words from Queens West: ³attractive nuisance.²

Queens West explained that most of the parents¹ ideas for play structures might invite injuries and litigation, but children are climbing the unprotected stainless steel shading structures in the strip-park (see below). Other hazards that the parents reported are as follows:

  • a child¹s thumb was caught in a perforated stainless steel bench.

  • babies have cut themselves on sharp fencing in the tot-lot.
